These experiments illustrate changes in the isothermal pressure/volume relationship for a gas under a range of pressures. The volume of a constant mass of CO2 confined in a tube immersed in a bath held at 0 C is measured by students as a function of the pressure exerted by a column of mercury behind the gas. At low pressures, CO2 behaves as a perfect gas. Therefore, the relationship between log p and log V is a straight line with slope of unity. Students observe deviations from ideality at higher pressures. The phase transition from gas to liquid at high pressures is accentuated by drastic decreases in the volume of the CO2. (15 minutes)
