When students are forced to choose a side on a given issue and defend it, they are motivated to generate ideas, think critically, and defend their claims. Co-teachers Shatara Johnson and Ashley Brown scaffold, model, and coach students.
Student groups work together to make a claim, decide on evidence to support it, and choose a representative to make their argument. Johnson and Brown act as coaches to the opposing sides and encourage them to generate their own ideas.
