Medical errors continue to be recognized as a significant cause of thousands of unnecessary injuries and deaths in the United States. As part of the general response aimed at reducing medical errors, resident safety has taken on a more critical role. This program provides nurses and other healthcare professionals with an understanding of the Joint Commission’s National Patient Safety Goals for long-term care environments and teaches how to identify and implement the key Elements of Performance developed to accomplish the patient safety goals for long term care residents. It discusses how to improve the accuracy of resident identification and the safety of using medications, how to reduce the risk health care-associated infections and harm resulting from falls, and how to prevent healthcare-associated pressure ulcers. The program also describes a sample model of a resident safety plan that the Commission has suggested for every institution.
