Introduction: Imaginary Movements (03:04)

FREE PREVIEW

Athletes and performers use visualization to prepare for action. Stephen Rosenholtz instructs students to lie on their backs and sense the five cardinal lines of the body. These include the legs, arms, and spine.

Arm Lift (06:27)

Students lie on their right side and extend their arms in front of them. They lift and lower the left arm behind them. They reach the arm from the shoulder to the ceiling and rotate it in the shoulder socket.

Differentiating the Arm (04:23)

Students lift their arm behind them while rolling their head in the opposite direction. Then, they lift the head with the arm and notice improved movement. On their backs, they notice a difference between right and left sides.

Torso Twist with Head Roll (04:18)

Students lie on their right side and extend their left arm behind them. They roll the head from side to side and then just move the eyes right and left.

Torso Twist with Head Lift (02:24)

Students lie on their right side and bring the left arm behind them. They interlace hands behind the head and lift the head to look at the left hip. Returning to their backs, they visualize the cardinal lines.

Imagining Arm Movement (04:12)

Students switch to their left side and lift their right arm to the ceiling. They imagine it extending toward the ceiling and rotating the shoulder joint. Then, they test the movements.

Imagining Arm Differentiation (02:24)

Students imagine lifting their arm behind them while rolling their head in the opposite direction. Then, they test the movement. Rosenholtz emphasizes using small movements and staying within the comfort zone.

Imagining Torso Twist with Head Roll (03:26)

Imagining movement employs kinesthetic messages and contracts the muscles minutely. Students extend their arm behind them and imagine rolling the head from side to side. They return to their backs and notice changes to the cardinal lines.
