French Impressionist and Post Impressionist Paintings (04:10)

Paintings from the USSR are loaned to the Hermitage Museum to be displayed on the walls of the Pushkin Gallery. This is the first time these paintings will be loaned to the National Gallery of Art.

Hanging the Paintings (02:23)

The team must decide the layout of the paintings; the project was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Curator J. Carter Brown analyzes the paintings.

Impressionist Paintings (04:53)

Brown struggles over how to begin the show and decides on Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting "Child With a Whip"; the flow of the art show must make historical sense as it moves through the museum. Claude Monet, Renoir, Camille Pissarro and others rebelled against the art establishment and forms of their time.

Expressionists Paintings (04:15)

Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin worked together at Arles. Van Gogh is known for mutilating his ear after an argument with Gauguin. Hear readings from Van Gogh's and Gauguin's personal writings.

Cubism Paintings (06:11)

The gallery’s last section is devoted to the work of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Several artists that arrived later to the movement are also included. The idea of Cubism was not to make a conventional likeness, but to create abstract beauty.

Henri Matisse (04:47)

Russian businessmen Ivan Morozov and Sergei Shchukin selected artists of the French Impressionist period before they reached their peak of success. After the Russian Revolution, the paintings became the property of the Russian Nation. Brown's favorite painting is Matisse’s “Nasturtiums With the Dance.”
