Foundation Understanding of Semiology (02:03)

FREE PREVIEW

Semiology is the science of meaning, analysis of sign systems. Semiology aims to understand reality as a text. This video focuses on establishing basic assertions concerning the nature of text and presents logical steps of the idea of using text to embrace all of social reality.

Rules of Text (02:00)

The word concept "text" is a written form of any sort governed by social conventions. The nature of texts suggests that there are different levels of rules governing the texts. Rules govern not only the production of text, but also the interpretation of them.

Reality Values (02:34)

Assertions made in a work of fantasy fiction are not intended to hold reality values as those in a news story. Facts being asserted in news stories compared to fiction novels have a different reality status in relation to the intention. Knowledge, whether conscious or unconscious, of the rules governing texts is necessary for the correct interpretation.

Oral Text (01:19)

Written texts can be seen as inscriptions of oral texts. Social rules and conventions govern how stories are told. Stories are used as guides to our continued interpretation and reinterpretations of the world around us.

Symbols and Text (02:32)

Explore examples of social actions that equal elements of text. Exchanging of rings, graduations, and flag at half-mast showcase this assertion. Text is fundamental to social life.

Perception (03:43)

Perception of reality is within frameworks of meaning and interpretation. Frameworks have individual characteristics, yet these characteristics are within larger frameworks that are socially-determined. Social, linguistic, and literary theories have understood the underlying rules for analyzing and interpreting written and oral texts.

Interpreting Text (01:18)

Linguistics analyzes the fundamental elements and structure of speech and writing. Literary theory provides explanations and analysis of text on a different level. Social theory examines the formation of meaning across contexts; thus, social reality should be studied as text.

Saussure's Contributions (04:37)

Explore the origin of the "F-word" and its versatility in the English language. Saussure initiated the synchronic study of language- analysis of the way in which meaning is structurally generated. Saussure argued that there were two different aspects of language- langue and parole.

Sign Systems (03:32)

A sign is the union of a signifier and a signified while the signifier is a written marking or sound unit in speech. The signified is the mental image or idea provoked by the signifier. The relationship between signifier and signified is arbitrary and meaning is a matter of social convention.

Langue (02:18)

Langue is the structure of language and allows meaning to be generated. Explore paradigmatic and syntagmatic choices. Linguistic structure governs the production and interpretation of texts.
