Introduction: Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies - Episode 1 (03:16)
The Valley of the Kings is a popular destination. Experts discuss Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. This film will examine details about Tut's life, rule, and death.
Tutankhamun Exhibition (06:07)
Dr. Yasmin El Shazly and Mahmoud Rashad meet Dr. Mostafa Waziri at the Egypt Museum and gain exclusive access to the exhibition. Waziri discusses why the discovery of Tut sparked significant interest in Egyptology and Howard Carter; Tutankhamun was not an important king.
Tutankhamun's Family Background (05:31)
Tut's father is Akhenaten, his mother could be Kiya or Nefertiti, and his grandfather is Amenhotep III. Ancient Egypt is polytheistic but Amun-Re is the state god. Priests become too powerful, leading to a change of religion. Akhenaten moves the capital to Amarna.
Horemheb, Ay, and Nefertiti guide Tutankhamun. El Shazly and Rashad visit the archaeological site and reflect on Akhenaten introducing Aten and moving the capital. They examine the Hymn to the Aten in Ay’s tomb.
Royal Tomb (03:25)
El Shazly and Rashad explore what was supposed to be Akhenaten and his family's burial place. They examine reliefs of Aten, the funeral of Meketaten, and possibly Tutankhamun. Evidence suggests a plague took the lives of Tut's family members, making him king.
Temple of Amenhotep III (05:37)
Amenhotep III's reign is the peak of Ancient Egyptian civilization. Tutankhamun ascends the throne at the age of nine and reestablishes the cult of Amun. A sphinx reveals a desire to rid evidence of Akhenaten’s religion and link Tutankhamun to his grandfather.
El Shazly visits the site of New Kingdom high official tombs. Tarek Tawik discusses several reliefs, including a controversial title, and Horemheb's career. Ay seizes the throne after Tut's death; Horemheb becomes pharaoh three years later.
Tomb of Maia (04:32)
Dr. Zahi Hawass and Rashad examine the tomb of Tutankhamun's wet-nurse located in the necropolis of Saqqara; she was one of Tut's closest allies. Hawass states the mummy of KV35 is Tut's mother and is not Nefertiti.
CT Scans of Tutankhamun (06:30)
Tut's mummification is unique. Dr. Sahar Saleem discusses images of Tut's face and other physical findings. Andrew Nelson creates a 3D model of Tutankhamun's skull based on the CT scans.
Tutankhamun's Reign (07:34)
Prof. Aidan Dodson discusses what occurred during the years between Tut's ascension to the throne and the return to orthodoxy. Hawass argues that Younger Lady is Tut's mother, not Nefertiti; Dodson believes KV35 is Nefertiti. El Shazly and Rashad consider Tut’s family, reign, and death.
