Adolf Hitler invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. Joseph Stalin ordered the protection of Moscow at all cost. Russia moved heavy industry from Ukraine to the Urals and produced large quantities of tanks.

Soviet Alliance (05:59)

Stalin allied with Western powers. Battles inside the Soviet Union occurred on an unprecedented scale. Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Roosevelt met in Yalta to decide the future of Europe. Germany surrendered and the Allies split the country in two. Russia attacked Japan.

Post-War Period (06:01)

Japan surrendered, Roosevelt died before the end of the war, and Churchill feared the Soviet Union's power. Stalin established a system in several eastern countries and Churchill voiced his concerns in a 1946 speech. Experts discuss the hardening of the Cold War.

Cold War (06:50)

The Soviet Union launched the Molotov Plan in response to the Marshall Plan. Mao Zedong won the Chinese Civil War and the first proxy battle of the Cold War occurred in Korea. Stalin died in March 1953; Nikita Khrushchev seized power.

Space Race/Arms Race (08:10)

In 1956, Khrushchev denounced the cult of personality that formed around Stalin. In October 1957, the Soviets launched a space satellite. Acts of espionage increased and the downing of Gary Powers’ U-2 spy plane marked a crisis point. In 1961, the Soviets sent Yuri Gagarin into space.

Cold War Flashpoints (09:58)

Khrushchev faced various pressures and sanctioned Walter Ulbricht to build the Berlin Wall. The U.S. discovered Soviet placement of nuclear weapons in Cuba. The Soviets and Americans struck a bargain to end the Cuban Missile Crisis.
