Nolan is a modern director who adds a unique cleverness to mainstream thrillers.

"Following" (03:16)

Nolan was born in London in 1970. His father had connections to the film industry. Nolan ran the Film Society at UCL where he met his wife Emma Thomas. He directed his first film with a very small budget.

"Memento" (04:02)

In 2000, Nolan directed Guy Pearce and Carrie Anne Moss in this noir style thriller. He and Thomas moved to Los Angeles.

"Insomnia" (03:39)

This 2002 film starred Al Pacino as a detective investigating a homicide in Alaska. This project showed that Nolan was capable of directing a major studio film with well-known actors.

"Batman Begins" (04:09)

In 2005, Nolan directed the first film of a new Batman Franchise directed at a new generation of fans. It starred Christian Bale and told the superhero's origin story.

"The Prestige" (02:31)

Nolan reunited with Bale and Michael Caine for this complicated 2006 film set in the world of magic and illusion.

"The Dark Knight" (03:16)

Nolan released the sequel to "Batman Begins" in 2008. Heath Ledger starred as the Joker; he and Nolan created a new version of the villain.

"Inception" (03:03)

This 2010 film starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Nolan drew on his own ideas and memories as well as books, movies, and television for inspiration.

"The Dark Knight Rises" (02:48)

Nolan released the third film in the Batman franchise in 2012. It was the last of his Batman trilogy. Next, he worked as a writer and producer on "Man of Steel."

"Interstellar" (03:01)

This sci-fi released in 2014 starred Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway. Nolan used a huge sound stage rather than relying on CGI.

"Dunkirk" (05:22)

This 2017 war film was different from Nolan's other films. It told the true story of the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II from the perspectives of land, sea and air.

"Tenet" (03:57)

This high concept film was released in 2020. The premise is that people and objects can move back and forth in time. It starred John David Washington.
