Introduction: Episode 3: Alvin: Pioneer of the Deep (Changing Seas, Season 13) (03:55)

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution operates the deep-sea submersible DSV Alvin. The discovery of hydrothermal vents is one of the most significant dives. Experts will examine the impact Alvin has had on our understanding of the oceans.

DSV Alvin Upgrades (07:01)

Engineers work on improvements to the deep submergence vehicle, including extending its depth reach to 6,500 meters. Thousands of people have studied and explored the ocean in Alvin. Experts reflect on their first dive; it is a transformative experience.

DSV Alvin Origins (04:08)

Allyn Vine proposed that the U.S. develop a deep-submergence vehicle. WHOI collaborated with the Navy and General Mills and officials commissioned Alvin on June 5, 1964. Alvin recovered a hydrogen bomb in 1966 and experts began using it for scientific research in the 1970s.

Project Famous (05:11)

Experts developed a multi-submersible expedition to explore the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; Alvin made 17 dives. Three years later, an expedition to the Galapagos Rift led to the discovery of hydrothermal vents. Subsequent dives revealed more information about underwater events.

Hydrothermal Vent Systems (05:16)

Researchers continue to use Alvin to increase their knowledge; a series of dives in 2019 reveals information on how microbial communities change over time. Experts reflect on upgrades, future dives, and Alvin's impact.
