South Africa is the 8th largest wine producer in the world. The vineyards of the Cape are relatively small but the diversity of grape varieties allows the production of very different wines. The first vines were planted in the Cape of Good Hope by the Dutch East India Company in 1655. The Cape Peninsula and its surroundings have the oldest wine farms in South Africa, as well as a large concentration of wineries. The proximity of Cape Town and the beneficial effects of the maritime climate have made these vineyards the best in the country in terms of quality.
