Argentina is the fifth largest producer of wine in the world. The first vineyards were planted in the 16th century by Jesuit missionaries in the Mendoza region, taking advantage of the irrigation channels originally designed by the Incas. European immigrants introduced new grape varieties and improved winemaking techniques during the 19th century. Today, Mendoza is the most important wine region in Argentina and produces 70% of the country's wine.
