Chile is the 10th largest wine producer in the world. Vines were introduced to Chile by the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th century. The country increasingly relies on French winemakers and cultivates vineyards from European cuttings taken before phylloxera spread to Europe. Most of the vineyards are grouped in the Central Valley, towards the capital Santiago, between the coastal chain and the Andes Mountains.
