Alan is a certified tool and die maker. Being mechanically inclined and knowing he needed to develop a skill in a trade, he took an apprenticeship after high school. He took classes and learned on the job from others in the trade.

Anthony works with engineers, taking their concept and making models. Southco designs and manufactures fasteners. Anthony started at entry level and became a journeyman within three years. The company paid for his training.

The Job of a CAD Draftsperson and Advice to Students (02:47)

The draftsperson creates a CAD model to represent a design an engineer has developed, then creates drawings. CAD designers are in high demand and well paid. The work is collaborative. Don't be intimidated by the math and science.

You can no longer go into manufacturing straight out of high school. Now almost any job in manufacturing requires post-secondary experience. There are many different careers and educational pathways available.

Ian Evans, Electronics Engineering Technician (02:24)

Ian does hardware work for engineers. After graduating from college, he worked as a salesman and hated it. So he went to electronics school. He has progressed in his company as his knowledge grew. He learned a lot from his boss.

A big part of the job is prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting. You don't need a bachelor's degree to work in electronics. Technicians are in high demand and the pay is good. One third of engineering technicians work in electronics.
