Of all the monumental remains bequeathed to us by the ancient Egyptians, the three Great Pyramids of Giza on the outskirts of Cairo are the most impressive and the most emblematic of this civilization. To the south of the Great Pyramids, the site of Saqqarah is a vast necropolis that was occupied continuously throughout the history of ancient Egypt. Royal tombs and smaller burials stand side by side and provide numerous testimonies to the daily life of ancient Egypt. North of Luxor, the Temple of Edfu is dedicated to the God Horus. It is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt and the second largest building after Karnak.
