Petra was occupied around the 6th century B.C. by the Nabataeans, a nomadic people from the Arabian Peninsula. They used their unique position along the route that caravans used to transport fine goods between East and West to create a prosperous city. Many monuments are carved into the rocks spread across the city, including the Khazneh (the treasure), royal tombs, theater and monastery.
