Solids are atoms or molecules held in fixed positions. Learn about the basic structure of atoms and electrostatic force. Heating a solid makes molecules vibrate faster and move apart; cooling does the opposite. See examples of melting and freezing.
Gases consist of fast moving atoms or molecules that bounce around and collide; gases can be compressed. Boiling is the process of a liquid becoming a gas. Learn about boiling points, evaporation, and condensation.
Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide gas goes directly to a solid when cooled and directly to a gas when heated; compare dry ice to water ice. Molecules can change size when heated or cooled.
