Middle Eastern Diabetes Epidemic (08:31)


The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait all rank in the top 15 countries with the highest prevalence of diabetes. Dr. Sanjay Gupta revisits diabetes patient Vanessa Dominques, who has had gastric sleeve surgery. Fatima Nakhjavanpur has been diagnosed with latent autoimmune diabetes.

Dr. Gupta interviews Maha Abbas, who recalls the harrowing circumstances that led to her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Her symptoms included temporary blindness and the loss of movement in her right side. She raises awareness of the incurable disease with a series of talks.

South African transplant Nichola McDonald incorporates cycling into her diabetes management plan. Exercise has allowed her to maintain healthy blood sugar levels and to use less insulin. Graham Rafferty is president of the Desert Road Runners, the oldest running club in Dubai.
