The academy established by the African Gifted Foundation is a STEM-focused school for gifted girls from throughout Africa. Its goal is to provide better pre-college education to ensure students are admitted into the best colleges for STEM careers.
About 30% of people working in science in Africa are women. The African Science Academy is trying to change the trend and increase the number of girls pursuing STEM degrees and careers. The school partners with Ashesi University.
STEM professionals act as mentors for students at the African Science Academy. Elsie Effah Kaufmann gives students advice on how to navigate male-dominated fields. A panel of mentors attends an event at the school to judge student presentations.
