Dying during childbirth is more common in Malawi than most countries. Most people live in rural areas and must travel long distances for medical care. A maternity village in the Kasungu district gives expectant mothers a place to stay and receive reliable medical attention.
More than 180 expectant mothers are staying at the village. A midwife conducts daily checks on the women and provides educational talks about family planning and personal health.
Maternity Waiting Village provides home craft classes to benefit expectant mothers when they return home. The garden gives the women something to do and educates them about growing their own food. Dr. Ireen Zuze hopes villages are built in other Malawi districts.
