Young singers showcase their talents and compete to become Cardiff's singer of the World. Twenty-five singers will face off for the coveted prize. Iain Burnside, pianist and opera expert, will guest commentate. (Credits)

Mariusz Kwiecien (06:09)

The opera singer selected to represent Poland performs two arias. His father sings rock and roll and plays drums. Gwenan Edwards wonders if he has enough versatility to win the contest.

Serving on the Jury (01:25)

Jury members include Dame Joan Sutherland, Eva Randhawa, Cheryl Mills, Brian McMaster, and Peter Jonas. Anthony Freud briefs his panel on the voting procedure. Each night a winner of the round is chosen.

Mariselle Martinez (07:49)

The mezzo soprano performs two arias in front of a live audience. Burnside is impressed with Martinez' vocal range and dramatic performances.

Tigran Martirossian (07:04)

The bassist enjoys showing off his comedic abilities in "The Song of the Flea." Every competition feels different. Burnside feels Martirossian could spend his life portraying kings and emperors.

Lieder Prize (02:03)

Philip Thomas and Ingrid Surgenor select the piano for the competition.

Sam McElroy (06:46)

The baritone from Ireland performs an aria from "Billy Budd." McElroy shows the vulnerability and strength of the character.

Anja Harteros (08:11)

Her family is very proud she has been selected to represent Germany. The soprano performs an aria by Giuseppe Verdi, showing off her coloratura skills. Burnside describes the singer's breath control and melodic sound.

Finalist Announced (02:11)

Anja Harteros wins the night's competition, receives a goblet, and performs an encore. The competition is supported by BP Amoco. (Credits)
