Introduction: Cardiff Singer of the World 1999: Episode 5 (02:51)


Young singers showcase their talents and compete to become Cardiff's singer of the World. Participants who advance to the finals may not be the nightly winners. Gillian McIlwraith uses aromatherapy to relax. (Credits)

Gillian McIlwraith (06:15)

The mezzo-soprano from Scotland performs an aria composed by Claudio Monteverdi and Mozart. Jury members include Dame Joan Sutherland, Eva Randhawa, Carlo Bergonzi, Cheryl Mills, Brian McMaster, and Peter Jonas. Graeme Kaye will guest commentate.

Arnold Bezuyen (06:02)

The Dutch tenor performs arias from Richard Wagner and Umberto Giordano. Kay feels Bezuyen proved his excellence at the German repertoire but can also sing more lyrical operas.

Asako Tamura (06:38)

The Japanese soprano performs an aria from Mozart. Tamura uses computers to communicate with family and friends. Kay gives a tour of the new Cardiff Singer of the World competition website.

Enhancing Vocal Spectrum (02:08)

Graham Welsh describes how a trained singer can be heard above an orchestra. To become a great singer, a performer needs to become an artist and actor.

James Westman (08:29)

The baritone from Canada explains how he began his career as a boy treble until his voice changed. Westman performs Maurice Ravel's "The Drinking Song" from "Don Quichotte a Dulcinee" and an aria from "La Traviata."

Nadezhda Serdiuk (06:53)

The Russian mezzo-soprano sings an aria from Modest Mussorgsky. Kay describes how he felt her "let go" during "Gopak."

Competition Winner (02:13)

The winner of this round of Cardiff Singer of the World Competition is Westman. Joining him in the final will be Anja Harteros, Dae-San No, Mariusz Kwiecien, and Petra Petrova.
