Most of the universe consists of gas and solid material. Very little liquid exists in space. On Titan, Saturn's largest moon, conditions are right for the presence of liquid in lakes, but the liquid is methane, not water.

The arrangements of molecules are different in solids, liquids, and gasses. Liquid is a state of matter in limbo. On Titan, frigid temperatures keep methane molecules stuck together in a liquid form. Liquid methane collects in lakes on Titan.

On Titan, methane lakes have the appearance of water. The lake temperature is several hundred degrees below zero. Methane might be an appealing liquid for an alien life form.

Jupiter's magnetic field stretches over 4 million miles into space. The largest and most powerful magnetic fields in the universe shoot out from neutron stars. Inside this star is a super-fluid that spawns a massive magnet field.

Earth's most important liquid lies 1800 miles beneath the surface--a sea of liquid iron. Without a magnetic field, life on Earth would suffer. Brown dwarfs are 70 times more massive than Jupiter. Their clouds are made of gaseous iron vapor.
Earth-Like Planet (05:41)
About 20 light years from Earth, a planet names Gliese 581 d. It has ten times Earth's mass and is about twice the diameter. Some scientists believe this planet is a water world with no land to break up waves. Under the water is ice 7, a disordered state of water.

Jupiter's moon Europa is an arctic wasteland, sheathed in water ice and riddled with cracks. Europa's saltwater ocean beneath the ice is 60 miles deep.
Fluid Motion of the Early Universe (03:20)
Tiny particles called quarks and gluons are the building blocks for larger particles such as protons and neutrons, which in turn form atoms. These first elemental particles after the Big Bang moved in fluid-like patterns and ultimately formed the universe.
