In the 1950s, "The Killing" began to gain public attention and was backed by a film studio. Returning to the anti-war themes of "Fear and Desire," Kubrick made "Paths of Glory." Kurt Douglas offered Kubrick the chance to direct his most extravagant film yet, "Spartacus."
In 1961, Kubrick adapted "Lolita," the highly controversial novel by Vladimir Nabokov. The Cold War satire of "Dr. Stragelove" made for an anti-war masterpiece. Following "A Clock Work Orange," Kubrick filmed the period piece "Barry Lyndon."
Kubrick's "The Shining" was based on the novel by Stephen King; following this film, he returned to an anti-war setting with "Full Metal Jacket." Kubrick waited 12 years before releasing his final film "Eyes Wide Shut." Kubrick is known for redefining each genre in which he created a film.

Stanley Kubrick is considered one of the greatest and most influential directors in cinematic history. His early work includes The Killing (1956), Paths of Glory (1957), and Dr. Strangelove (1964). His cinematic masterpiece was to arrive in 1968, a year before the Moon landing, with the creation of the space epic 2001: A Space Odyssey. This was followed by A Clockwork Orange (1972) and The Shining (1980) starring Jack Nicholson.
