Jackson and Service Dog Belle (05:21)

Belle, a black lab, helps a nine-year-old boy with autism. Jackson is overwhelmed, talks incessantly, and isolates himself. Belle, trained by inmates through the program Pooch, calms and distracts Jackson so he can cope with various situations.
Belle's Job (02:55)
Jackson and his family go to the museum with Belle to see how Jackson copes. Belle’s job is to keep Jackson calm and safe. Some autism support dogs help kids to attend college, learn social norms, and be more independent.
Training Dogs in Prison (02:16)
Inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility train service dogs in partnership with the Pooch Program. Inmates train dogs on impulse control, staying focused, and various tasks for mobility needs. The program is a way for inmates to give back to society and gain emotional support.
Bernard and Service Dog Edison (05:20)
Edison, a deaf Bulldog Terrie, is an emotional service dog for Bernard who suffers from PTSD, bipolar disorder, and panic attacks. When Bernard is having an episode, Edison calms Bernard and distracts him by physically positioning himself to make contact. Edison has been owner-trained with hand signals.
Bernard and Socialization (05:06)
Since Edison became Bernard’s emotional support dog, Bernard interacts with others and talks about his trauma. Bernard takes photos of Edison in front of street art and contacts artists; he also started painting.
