Liam and Service Horse Jupiter (02:52)
The miniature Mediterranean donkey is in training to be a certified therapy animal for Liam who has down syndrome. Feeding, grooming, and leading Jupiter gives Liam a sense of responsibility. Interacting with a therapy donkey helps with confidence, speech, coordination, and mobility.
Donkeys as Assistance Animals (03:39)
Jupiter stays at the Trish Franks School of Riding. Donkeys make good certified therapy animals for those with special needs. Jupiter provides comfort and confidence for Liam.

Jupiter needs to learn how to pull a cart; donkeys are good at paying attention. Liam gains confidence from driving the cart.
Training Donkeys (01:30)
Jenny Housley trains donkeys to be certified service animals. Donkeys learn to be desensitized to various things they might encounter when working with people with special needs.
Deborah and Prison Dogs (04:29)
In the California prison system, prisoners train dogs to become service animals. A former inmate is now a guide dog training instructor at the California Institution for men. When she was in prison, she trained dogs through Canine Support Teams.
Working With Prisoners (05:42)
After she was released from prison, Deborah obtained a job with Canine Support Teams to teach inmates how to train service animals. Inmates train the dogs for six month. They learn skills to assist people with mobility impairments, PTSD, and provide emotional support. Deborah returns to Chino Institution where she talks to the inmates about her experiences.
