Understanding of Cancer (03:37)


Beginning the 1970s, researchers realized that cancer is caused by several gene mutations and environmental factors. The understanding has led to newer treatment methods. The drug Gleevec targets the abnormality that causes leukemia and stops its cell growth.

Cause of Cancer (05:56)

The medical community believed cancer was caused by an infection until it was discovered to be a gene mutation. The gene was a proto-oncogene that helps cells divide and grow. When it mutates into a RAS oncogene, it can convert other cells into cancer cells.

Development of Cancer (05:54)

Numerous gene mutations, some of which happen naturally, must occur for cancer to develop. Tumor suppressor genes stop mutated cells from dividing, but cancer breaks down the process. The p53 protein is altered in various types of cancers.

The Cell Cycle (04:06)

Understanding how a normal cell moves through the cell cycle is important for researchers studying cancer. Dr. Leland Hartwell was able to illustrate the process using yeast.

Cancer's Immortality (07:00)

The telomere is protective cap for the DNA on the end of a chromosome, which is not fully copy after each cell replication. An enzyme called telomerase continues the telomere replication in cancer cells. Telomerase is a possible target for future cancer treatment.
