This episode will examine background, plot, and main characters of Othello. William Shakespeare's play does not have any subplots, comic episodes, non-essential action, parallel plots, or extraneous characters. Characters include Desdemona, Brabantio, Emilia, Cassio, and Roderigo; Iago schemes to make the Moor believe his wife is unfaithful.
Although Othello is a prominent general with a sense of justice, he does not feel comfortable in Venice because he is a Moor. Desdemona is committed in her love even when Othello grows angry and jealous; the villain Iago schemes against the Moor because he passed him over for promotion and may have had had an affair with Emilia. Learn how Shakespeare's play is similar to Medieval Morality play.
