The Earth's atmosphere is a sphere of gas enveloping the planet which protects it from the harmful rays of the sun but also allows enough solar energy to warm it. The four layers of the atmosphere are the thermosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere, and troposphere.

Seventy percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water which is mostly contained in saltwater oceans; different areas of the oceans have varying levels of salinity. Earth's oceans regulate its climate by absorbing and releasing solar energy generated by the sun.

Oceans distribute warmth throughout the planet after absorbing solar energy through the movement of their currents. The Gulf Stream is a current pulled warm air from the Southern U.S. to the British Isles.

Wind and ocean currents are responsible for distributing energy from the sun around the globe through convection loops.

The average weather condition in an area over a long period is climate which is caused by factors like ocean currents and winds. The three major climate regions are the temperate, tropical, and polar zones.
