Robert Whitman grew up in Minneapolis and focused his studies on theater. He traveled around the world before getting a degree in international relations. He eventually gained interest in photography and moved back to Minnesota to shoot for a modeling agency.

He describes his process of learning and experimenting, arguing that the photos are special because they capture Prince before fame. Immesoete and Whitman discuss the power of inexperience, creativity, passion to create something new.

Immesoete suggests that now it is harder to make a living as a photographer since advertising and budgets have shifted. Whitman argues that there is less in-person work and less time on each project, but there are more outlets for artistic work than ever. He still enjoys older technology and viewing photos in tactile ways.

Whitman expresses his love for photography and the lifestyle it has allowed him. He enjoys working with people and inspiring people through his creative working style and photographs. He recalls how people have thanked him for bringing his creativity and laughter into their lives.
