The Newman's son was born with a rare genetic disorder. Elizabeth Vargas reports on the family's journey.
Magda and Russel Newman recall Magda's lengthy labor and their son's delivery. Nathaniel would spend his first month in the neonatal intensive care unit at NYU where the Newmans met Nurse Practitioner Pat Chibbaro. Russel recalls seeing Christina Aguilera sing "Beautiful."
Nathaniel underwent over 10 surgeries his first year and had 53 surgeries by age 11. The Newmans have a second child and the brothers become close. Nathan recalls realizing he was different; "Wonder" created a powerful change in the way children treat him.
At age 12, Nathaniel undergoes a surgery to reset bones in his face; days later Magda is diagnosed with cancer. Nathaniel has the metal halo removed followed by the trach five months later; Magda is cancer free. Russel reflects on his family.
The Newmans meet Christina Aguilera. Magda tells her about the impact of her song and Aguilera sings for the family. The family attends the premier of "Wonder."

In this special edition of Nightline, Elizabeth Vargas follows Nathaniel Newman's amazing story of transformation: Newman was born with the facial anomaly Treacher Collins syndrome and endured 53 surgeries by age 11. Also interviewed is Wonder author R.J. Palacio, who tells the story behind her inspiration for the acclaimed book—which the Newmans credit with easing Nathaniel's move up to middle school. And, finally, Christina Aguilera surprises the family who was inspired by her song "Beautiful."
