Dengue fever is the most common mosquito borne viral disease, and is spreading from southeast Asia throughout the tropics. Dr. Kulkanya Chokephaibulkit explains the effects of dengue; even healthy children are at risk.
The Dengue mosquito lays eggs in clean, standing water; urbanization and increased travel leads to increased spread of the disease. The disease is endemic in certain areas, but GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi Pasteur are working towards creating a tetravalent vaccine.
Mosquito borne illnesses are common in the Mekong Delta area of Vietnam, but the city of Long Xuyen is home to a major Dengue research project. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc travels through An Giang General Hospital, visiting her patients with Dengue fever.
Health service volunteers and teachers at local schools work together to prevent Dengue fever outbreaks and infections within their communities in Vietnam. Dr. Harold Margolis of the Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative describes the need for disease prevention within the region.
Dengue fever’s frequency has increased due to global warming, and has now spread to the southern border of the United States. Dr. Lang explains worldwide immunization to the virus is the only way to eliminate Dengue fever.
