Monsiur Dumas learns that Marguerite Gautier died. The auction house is selling her belongings to pay off her creditors. Armand Duval plans to move the corpse to a different grave and cover it with camellias; Duval asks Dumas to accompany him.

Duval spies on Marguerite, because he believes she is seeing other men. Gautier spent the night with the Comte de Gaux. When Marguerite confronts Duval, he gives her a copy of Manon Lescaut.
