Preterm Labor (05:25)

Labor beginning prior to 37 weeks occurs in 5-10% of pregnancies and is associated with increased newborn morbidity and mortality. Contractions may be slowed by improving maternal hydration, resting, and administering tocolytics. Tocolytics delay labor for 24-48 hours so the mother can receive glucocorticoids for fetal lung maturation

Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding (05:08)

Abnormal bleeding is usually caused by placenta previa or abruptio placentae; if bleeding persists, a cesarean may be necessary. Hypertension in Pregnancy (08:24)

Hypertension categories include chronic, gestational, preeclampsia and eclampsia, and preeclampsia superimposed on chronic hypertension. Learn about HELLP syndrome and other complications. Eclampsia is characterized by maternal seizures and treated with magnesium sulfate; side effects are counteracted by calcium gluconate.
