Meet the Panelists (02:05)

FREE PREVIEW

Host David Malone asks, does the unconscious brain drive actions or is the conscious brain in full control? He introduces panel members psychologist Richard Bentall, philosopher Barry C. Smith, and journalist Shahidha Bari.

Shahidha Bari: The Pitch (04:53)

Bari advocates the accuracy of Freud's dealings with the unconscious. She believes the unconscious proves human beings are creative and ungovernable.

Barry C. Smith: The Pitch (03:44)

Smith says that Freud's writings are satisfying because of Freud's writing skills rather than psychological accuracy. The way people behave is done at a level of unconscious that is related to brain processes.

Richard Bentall: The Pitch (03:55)

Bentall says that judgments are often made implicitly. Freud has the story backwards; in a scientific view, the unconscious is the natural state of the world.

Theme One: Is there an Unconscious and if so What is it? (10:17)

Bari defends Freud's depiction of the unconscious; stories are never "just-so," they are the way we live. Smith speaks of re-claiming the unconscious.

Theme Two: Are there Thoughts which Cannot be Consciously Accessed? (07:05)

Smith describes a study that deceives people's unconscious and conscious beliefs. Bari speaks of Freud's mystical and analytical qualities. She says the most important aspect of Freud's dream analysis is the notion that dreams are worth studying.

Theme Three: Can We Have Full Control of Our Actions? - Part One (06:18)

Bentall does not consider the unconscious to be a storage facility in the brain; it is more complex. He discusses the necessities of unconscious thought. Bari feels the unconscious is "unobtainable and unbidden."

Theme Three: Can We Have Full Control of Our Actions? - Part Two (06:19)

Smith thinks the conscious mind cannot explain human beings and the Freudian obsession of the need for meaning is dangerous. Bari defends the idea that Freud discovered the unconscious.
